Baby Groot Wins The Internet In 2016 And More Guardians Of The Galaxy News

Baby Groot And Rocket

This weekend gave us two bits of Guardians of the Galaxy goodness for us to relish in. One has me super excited and the other not so much. I don’t really like to dwell on negatives, but sometimes you just can’t help yourself. But first off, let’s look at the really awesome news. A new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer launched this past weekend.

This trailer is serious business. I absolutely love it. I fell in love with the first movie after watching the first full trailer. I still break out into “Hooked on a Feeling” at random times to this day. The character introductions and overall tone of the trailer really set the stage for a great movie. I eventually bought the movie the week it came out on video. I had planned to just rent it first, but my wife and I knew we were going to watch it multiple times and we decided buying it was the best course of action. We don’t regret that decision at all. We both love the movie and my kids love it.

Nintendo Announces The Switch, Confirming The Most Recent NX Rumors

Nintendo Switch Do you remember all those rumors a while back about the NX being a hybrid mobile/console system with detachable controllers and cartridges instead of optical media? The ones that I was really worried about when I talked about them during one of my solo Molehill Mountain podcasts? Yeah those rumors. They were completely right. Today, Nintendo revealed that its next console is a hybrid mobile/home console called the Switch. If you haven’t watched the reveal trailer, where have you been? Anyway, here is the trailer:

Back when I talked about the NX rumors during the podcast, I expressed skepticism of the target market such a console would have. I was skeptical of exactly how such a system would market itself and compete with other consoles and mobile devices. I expressed plenty of skepticism of the whole idea in general. Well, not everything. I thought the change to game cartridges is a great idea.

peeping-marioGamers the world over rejoiced tonight as Nintendo finally popped its silence balloon and announced that it will air a “preview trailer” for its new console tomorrow morning (10/20/16) at 7a PST.

Its Twitter announcement was accompanied by the incredibly creepy image of Mario yanking back a shower curtain so he can watch you scrub your naughty bits.

Soon you’ll be able to enjoy Skylanders without being horrifically ripped off!

skylanders-academy

Skylanders is one of those Toys-to-Life games that require you to purchase a bunch of expensive toys in order to unlock content in the game you already paid full price for.  I wrote IGN’s wiki guide for two games in the series and calculated that you need to spend a minimum of $254.89 in order to experience everything in Skylanders: Swap Force. Skylanders: SuperChargers has the potential to cost you significantly more, depending on just how much of the game’s content you want to access.  A game, I must remind you, that costs $75 to start.

It’s horse poop.

But equine droppings aside, how’s the actual game?

Atlus drops the ball on Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse localization; handles it like a champ

smt-apocalypseShin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse releases for the 3DS in North America today but unfortunately, it’s shipping with a bit of a localization boo-boo.  Turns out there’s still a smidgen of untranslated Japanese text during a boss battle near the end of the game.

Atlus, the game’s developer and publisher, acknowledged the mistake and posted an apology and explanation on its website yesterday.

Pokemon Go’s Buddy System Wants You To Walk 400 Kilometers To Evolve A Magicarp

Pokemon Go's New Buddy System

Get ready to walk your feet off. Pokemon Go really thinks you want to walk 400 kilometers to evolve your Magikarp. Distances for pretty much every other pokemon are also comparable.

Yesterday, Niantic released its Buddy Pokemon update. With this update, you can assign one pokemon to be your “buddy”. As your buddy, the pokemon appears next to you in your profile and next to your headshot. As you walk, your buddy has a distance meter that fills up. When full, you get one solitary candy.

OMG! Did Nintendo just inDIRECTly announce Skyward Sword HD?!!!

Skyward SwordNintendo aired its 3DS-focused Direct presentation this morning and one thing stuck out as odd to me.

“We’re happy to announce that the original version of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be releasing today on the Nintendo eShop on Wii U.”

The “original version,” eh?  Well, that’s an peculiar way to phrase that announcement considering there’s only one version of Skyward Sword…

Sorry fanboys, tomorrow ain’t the day for Nintendo NX info

Nintendo DirectThe Nintendo NX.

We know almost nothing official about Nintendo’s “dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept” other than what I just put in quotes.  That’s pretty much all the Big N has revealed about the sucker and we learned that a year and a half ago.  It’s been radio silence ever since and rabid Nintendo fanboys like me have been DYING for new info.  Nintendo said it would reveal more about the NX in 2016.  Well, we still have four months left in the year and many think September is the month Nintendo will finally lift the curtain.

Yesterday, Nintendo announced a Nintendo Direct for September 1st.  Is this it?  Is it FINALLY time to learn about the NX?

No.

Oh The Games We Could Have Had; An Ode To Cancelled Games

Infinity by AffinixLast week I played a short preview of a Gameboy Color game that was never released. Infinity is a Strategy RPG by game developer Affinix. It was a planned release for the Gameboy Color but was never finished and released because publishers refused to pick it up. They were much more interested in publishing games for the newly released Gameboy Advance.

It is a shame that the game was never able to be made. Infinity is a lot of fun. Its gameplay is excellent, if a little buggy (the game is incomplete after all). The story was engaging. I would have loved to see it completed. Sadly, it is likely to never be.

How Much Would You Have To Spend To Get All The NES Classic’s Games?

nes-classic-edition-boxA few weeks ago, Nintendo announced the NES Classic Edition, a small console with 30 built-in games. These games are some of the greatest games ever released on the NES. Since the announcement, I have mentioned several times how this is a truly great deal to get all these games and a console to play them on for only $60.

However, there are some people who don’t think that it is a great deal, that they could find a much better deal getting physical copies of all these games. To me, that is clearly bunk. However, I decided to take a look at how much one would have to spend to buy all these games and a console to play them on.
